The Young Duo wins All-Brazil Final against Evandro and Andre Loyola, USA’s Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena take Bronze.
Today marked the culmination of five days of intense men’s competition on Fort Lauderdale Beach when Saymon Barbosa and Álvaro Filho took home the gold medal at the Swatch Beach Volleyball Fort Lauderdale Major. The 32 men’s teams who began the tournament were dwindled down to the final four powerhouse pairs who competed today. Two teams from both Brazil and United States faced off, but only Saymon and Álvaro took home the Gold.
Brazil proved triumphant today over the US in both semifinals matches to begin the day’s action. The first match of the day saw top US team Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser fall to Brazil’s Evandro and Andre, mere hours after the US pair eliminated the dominant Rio Gold Medalists Bruno and Alison the night before.
The next match saw the Cinderella story of US duo John Hyden and Ryan Doherty come to an end at the hands of Saymon and Álvaro. Ryan was a late substitute partner after John’s regular partner, Tri Bourne, was a late scratch and could not compete. The pair had an unbelievable run and went further than anyone anticipated with such little playing time together. Ryan and John later fell in three sets to Nick and Phil in the All-American bronze medal match.
This set the stage for an All-Brazilian Final between two teams starting their 2017 season with brand new partners in Fort Lauderdale. Saymon and Álvaro rose to the occasion over their fellow countrymen to secure the Gold and an undefeated record all week, having never even lost a set.
The net presence from the 23 year old Saymon and energy from 26 year old Álvaro proved too much to handle. They now have bragging rights over the best players in the world as winners of the season opener of the Swatch Major Series. With this being their first major competition together the future is extremely bright for the young pair, but Álvaro says they’re just taking it one competition at a time. “It’s hard to think about the future. I just want to enjoy this victory, but it does mean a lot because we work so hard. I have to say thanks to everyone in Brazil and all our fans here. Thank you so much!”
Tomorrow the action continues, but this time it’s the women’s turn to rock the packed crowds in their semifinal which will feature fierce competition as the best players from the U.S., Brazil and Germany will square off to see who will get gold.
