Spaniard wins at Phillip Island in Australia as MotoGP rival Dovizioso struggles.

Marc Marquez opened up a 33-point lead over main MotoGP title rival Andrea Dovizioso at Phillip Island in Australia after winning another thrilling 2017 race.

The Spaniard claimed all 25 points with Italian Dovizioso only managing a paltry three points back in 13th place as the 2017 season faces just two more rounds.

Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi managed to fend off Johann Zarco for second with Maverick Vinales powering past Zarco on the final straight to snatch third.

Australian Jack Miller led his home MotoGP race after the first lap with Dovizioso’s huge Ducati mistake at turn 1 on the second lap pushing him down the order to 20th.

Zarco crashed into Marquez at the hairpin soon after with the championship leader settling into a fine rhythm by lap seven as he duelled with the Frenchman and Italian Rossi.

He eventually managed to get the jump on both riders to pull away for a crucial victory with team-mate Dani Pedrosa back in 12th place after a disappointing weekend.

Red Bull KTM Factory pair Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith completed an impressive stop by finishing in ninth and 10th places respectively.

Afterwards Marquez said, “Honestly it was an amazing race and from the beginning I got out, tried to be quiet and warm the tyres well, and tried to be calm.

“But on the second or third lap, already there was the first contact from Johann I think, and I start to think OK, we will see during the race, but this will be tough.

“It was a little bit dangerous but in the end I attacked a lot and especially in the middle of the race I was trying to control where Dovi was, trying to analyse everything.

“It makes me more happy for the points advantage, but now it is time to breathe and understand what is our options, where we can fight in Malaysia and Valencia, but try to take points and don’t be too aggressive.”
