Vans US Open of Surfing Presented by Swatch Is ON

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Wednesday, July 31, 2019) –– The Vans US Open of Surfing presented by Swatch, a World Surf League (WSL) Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) 10,000 event, and one of the largest action sports festivals in the world, is ON for a 7:30am PDT start. Action resumes with women’s Round 2 Heat 7 and will be followed by some of North America’s, and the world’s, top men and women Pro Junior competitors.
 
One of the sport’s most iconic figures, seven-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) kicks off the morning against QS threats Sophie McCulloch (AUS), Teresa Bonvalot (PRT), and Hinako Kurokawa (JPN) in Round 2 Heat 7.
 
Former event winner Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) debuts in Round 2 Heat 9 where she faces former Championship Tour (CT) competitor Claire Bevilacqua (ITA), qualification hopeful Mahina Maeda (JPN) and Australian talent Kirra-Belle Olsson (AUS).
 
Last year’s World Title contender, former event winner, and California’s own Lakey Peterson (USA) takes on one of the QS elite Holly Wawn (AUS), former CT veteran Alessa Quizon (HAW), and 2017 World Junior Champion Vahine Fierro (FRA).
 
Action then shifts to some of the world’s top men and women Pro Juniors featuring the likes of North America No. 1’s Kade Matson (USA) and Caitlin Simmers (USA), reigning World Junior Champion Kirra Pinkerton (USA) alongside the nation’s finest such as Alyssa Spencer (USA) and Samantha Sibley (USA). But, they must take on an international field in attendance such as reigning World Junior Champion Mateus Herdy (BRA), Japan’s Joh Azuchi (JPN), Australia’s Caleb Tancred (AUS) and Sol Aguirre (PER).

Alongside the surfing, the Vans US Open of Surfing also hosts skateboarding and BMX competitions alongside authentic community activations and artful entertainment in Surf City USA.
