FIM Speedway Grand Prix racing back at Wroclaw’s revamped Olympic Stadium after 12-year absence.
FIM Speedway Grand Prix action returns to Wroclaw’s iconic Olympic Stadium from 2019 in a new three-year deal.
The city has already made SGP history, having staged the first ever FIM Speedway Grand Prix in 1995 – won by Tomasz Gollob.
While it hasn’t hosted an SGP round since 2007, it staged last year’s inaugural Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nations Finals, won by Russia.
The Olympic Stadium may have a rich past, but it also has a huge future after undergoing a stunning revamp in 2016 ahead of last year’s World Games.
Home to PGE Ekstraliga club BETARD Sparta Wroclaw and their SGP icons Maciej Janowski and Tai Woffinden, the stadium has cemented its status as one of the world’s most iconic speedway venues.
BSI Speedway managing director Torben Olsen can’t wait to bring the series back to Wroclaw after a 12-year absence next year.
He said: “Sparta Wroclaw and the city of Wroclaw were determined to bring SGP racing back to the city and we’re very excited to be working with them in the coming years. The upgrades carried out and the new facilities are fantastic, and yet the Olympic Stadium still retains its unique and historic character. It will be a huge night for Maciej Janowski and Tai Woffinden, who will be keen to get the win on their home track. It should also be a brilliant night in a real speedway city – one with plenty to offer visitors from all around the world.”
President of WTS Wroclaw Andrzej Rusko said: “It’s fantastic news for all speedway fans from Wroclaw and the entire region. Speedway Grand Prix’s comeback to the Nowy Olimpijski is a credit to the City of Wroclaw that gave us such strong support in making a deal with BSI Speedway. The Olympic Stadium has proved many times that it is a perfect arena for great events. Since its reconstruction we have had everything that is required to organise world class events. We also have fantastic fans, a great track and the riders of BETARD Sparta Wroclaw team that already successfully compete in the World Championship. All of that is going to create a tremendous spectacle’
Jacek Sutryk, director of Social Affairs from the department of Wroclaw City Council said “Wroclaw is part of speedway history. It was here that 23 years ago the first ever Speedway Grand Prix was held. After the reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium for The World Games in 2017, we knew that it was going to be a perfect place to hold world class events. That is why we were keen that it becomes part of the World Championship in 2019. I am sure that the fans will witness a fantastic meeting at the Olympic Stadium.
Thanks go to SPARTA Wroclaw. The event will be organised at the highest level and the club has proved many times, for example during the organisation of The World Games, that everything will be buttoned up.
It will be a great festival of speedway. We will host fans not only from Poland but from all over the world. I hope that everyone will find out why Wroclaw is rated as the 2018 European Best Destination. Already today we are expecting you in Wroclaw”
The date for the 2019 Wroclaw FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland will be announced in due course and will replace the Gorzow FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland. |
