Many pilots from around the world responded to the Algerian desert’s call

The Sahari Rally, now in its fourth edition, is growing exponentially and has amassed so many contestants that organizers have had to stop accepting applications although they keep on arriving.

Under the imaginary guise of Aghlad, the legendary hero of Timimoun, pilots from France, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Turkey are preparing themselves to compete against skilled and fast Algerian pilots.

The adrenaline rich race will take contestants through exceptional landscapes and bivacs under the stars, both of which are accessible only in the deep Sahara, and together form an unforgettably magical experience.

The sounds of drums, of Idbalen Boussaafia and the Algerian bag pipes, all accompany the dances and equestrian games in the evenings. The smiles, tradition and warm welcome Algerians offer, create a vibrant atmosphere that is specific and inseparable from the territory.

Algeria is the largest country in Africa and the largest in the Arabic world. In addition to being one of the most beautiful territories in the world, Algeria attracts off road aficionados and adventurers. It enchants the heart and spirits of those who pass through it today, as it did those who in the years have discovered the legendary Paris-Dakar.

With over 3,400km of tracks, sand and dunes, the route arranged by FASM will be enriched by the exceptional treasures hidden in the Grand Erg Occidental.

After the technical checks on November 1st, the caravan will leave Souidania and head to Brézina. The following day they will emabark on the first 210km stretch of the race, followed by a transfer to Timimoun: the Door to the Desert.

For the following two mornings, the teams will leave the small red mud houses that surround Timimoun, and will face the dunes of the Grand Erg. Here they will compete on two special trials – 200km and 150km, respectively.

On the third day, the race will lead them to Adrar, where they will crossing breath taking landscapes which frame this region, one in between dunes and Adrars.

Although still in the dunes and thousand-colour landscapes, the route leading to El Goléa will require heightened attention, as the teams will be faced with navigational curve balls.

In El Goléa, through even more sand on the last stretch which will lead them all back to Ghardaïa.

Some days ago, we learned the sad news of the premature death of Chihab Baloul, president of FASM . He was a promoter and driving motor of the Sahari Challenge, died while undertaking route checks for the race in Timimoun.

Mr. Amir Benmamar has stepped up to the role to ensure the event proceeds as expected. The event hopes to ensure Algeria once again is reckoned a destination for off-roading as it has been in the past.
