Two groups of six announced for Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in June.
The Austrian legends travelled to Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital city, to conduct the blind draw of the event for sailors aged 19 to 25.
Twelve countries will be represented with teams using foiling catamarans for the first time – high-speed AC45f boats which rise above the water on foils to fly at speeds of over 35 knots (65km/h).
This echoes the boats raced by the professional senior sailors of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series that will begin on May 26.
Hagara revealed, “There are six sailors per team and six teams per pool. In the Qualifiers this June, the top four teams from each pool will advance, and we’ll have a total of eight boats at the starting line in the Finals.
“They’ll sail the same racecourse used by the America’s Cup teams, so it’s going to be a big challenge and a great opportunity to learn and prove themselves.”
Steinacher added, “The pools look quite equal and I think it will be mistakes that prevent teams from advancing out of the Qualifiers.
“However, the British team (Land Rover BAR Academy) is a big favourite because they have experience sailing a foiling catamaran, the GC32, in the Extreme Sailing Series. But we’ll see. It’s not easy to be the favourite.”
The Austrian duo introduced the event back in 2013 as a career pathway towards the America’s Cup with eight sailors from that debut having since gone on to professional careers.
These include Peter Burling, who will take the helm for Emirates Team New Zealand in the upcoming America’s Cup, and his team-mate Blair Tuke.
