Hall, Kopfstein and Velarde get airborne with European one of a kind plane.

A trio of Red Bull pilots took to the skies with Europe’s only twin-tailed P-38 Lightning in a stunning photoshoot on the eve of the Red Bull Air Race in Wiener Neustadt.

Matt Hall, Petr Kopfstein and Juan Velarde took in some of Lower Austria’s most famed sights on the ground below, including the Wachau wine-growing region, the ruins of the 12th-Century Aggstein Castle and the stunning Stift Göttweig. The P-38 Lightning was flown by Austrian pilot Raimund Riedmann.

From 15-16 September, the aerial trio will be among those battling it out at speeds of up to 370 km/h and enduring forces of up to 12G to win the last European stop of this year’s championship.

The title race remains wide open with three races remaining – two in the United States after Austria – with American pilot Michael Goulian leading on 55 points while Aussie Hall and Czech pilot Martin Sonka are level in second on 49 points.
