Former Olympic champion Phil Dalhausser was ready to quit.
Have you ever felt like giving up the day job? Telling your boss where to go and calling it quits? Phil Dalhausser has. And have you ever questioned what your purpose is in life?
Phil Dalhausser has done that, too.
Before the 2019 beach volleyball season kicked off, the 2008 beach volleyball Olympic champion was preparing to put the Mikasa down for good after contemplating retirement.
After 16 years on the professional circuit, the American blocker was sick of leaving his family behind for half of the year for the sake of beach volleyball.
“I wanted to stop. I thought about it a lot. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Nobody else could help, this was up to me to work out for myself,” says the Thin Beast in a revealing interview with the Beach Volleyball Major Series.
But a conversation in the kitchen with wife Jennifer one day changed all that and thoughts of an early retirement were shelved.
“I asked myself out loud ‘what is my purpose in life?’”
Jennifer’s answer to her husband’s question resulted in a thought-provoking response.
So instead of sitting in his Florida home this summer, the 39-year-old will head to Europe with the aim of regaining a World Championship title that he won back in 2007 – and he’ll do so with Jennifer and his two children by his side.
