The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team went straight down to business for the first session at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA). With rain expected tomorrow, Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi were full of determination to post a good lap time early on in the Grand Prix of The Americas weekend.

Rossi spent the first part of the dry but overcast FP1 session getting his YZR-M1‘s set-up sorted, before putting in a mini time attack in the final stages. Despite the track still being quite dusty, the Italian made big strides, and was one of only two riders to drop under the 2‘06-mark. He secured second place with a best lap of 2’05.926s, 0.396s from first.

Viñales was also buzzed to start the first 45-minute free practice session in the USA. Listing COTA as one of his favourite tracks, he was quick to find a good pace from the beginning of this morning’s free practice session. Besides being the fastest rider in sector one, the Spaniard also set a best time of 2‘06.257s today for third place, 0.727s from the front.

2nd position – Best lap time: 2’05.926 (+0.396) – Laps: 16

The first session was pretty positive because I was fast already from the beginning, although the track was not in a good condition. Now we need to work on the balance of the bike, on the tyres – to understand what the best options are for the race – and also on the electronics, to improve acceleration in the corner exit. I look forward to FP2 because we still have a margin to improve.

3rd position – Best lap time: 2’06.257 (+0.727) – Laps: 19

The FP1 session was quite positive. I always feel good in Austin, it‘s a track I really like. Even though the condition of the track was not the best, the bike was working well. We still have a margin to further improve, but the bike is running at a good level, so we started the weekend in a much better and more positive way compared to the first two races.
