Improve your flat track racing techniques and expand your overall motorcycle skills at RIDE Academy on March 3-4
Instructors who have earned six AMA Pro Flat Track championships provide one-on-one coaching

Charles City, Va. (February 22, 2012) – Imagine having the experience of multi-time champions and decorated pro racers to serve as your coach. While you may not be one of the nation’s top AMA Pro Flat Track racers yet, you can have a coach and mentor like the champions do to expand your skills. RIDE Academy takes motorcycle racing school to the next level and has spots open for the March 3-4 school.

RIDE Academy is led by former AMA Pro Flat Track racer and four-time main event winner Mike Hacker. He has coached and mentored many of the nation’s top racers, including reigning champion Jake Johnson. Hacker is joined by instructors that include three-time AMA Pro Flat Track champion Kenny Coolbeth, two-time and current AMA Pro Flat Track Champion Johnson, AMA Pro Flat Track racer Johnny Lewis who has finished in the top eight the past three seasons, and former AMA Pro Flat Track Twins Champion Jared Mees who finished second during the 2011 series.

“It’s not every day that a student can ride alongside a champion, learn from the elite and absorb the knowledge of what took years for some to learn, all at a two-day school,” said Hacker. “We seek riders who are determined to excel in their racing, not only those who have the passion for riding. We desire to build the next champions with excellence in riding instruction.”

Students will learn a broad range of techniques to reduce lap times, and limit mistakes which tend to lead to poor finishes and crashes. At RIDE Academy, each student has the opportunity for one-on-one coaching with a champion or an established pro racer. This benefit is unique to RIDE Academy since it has five racers dedicating time at each school. While this school is intended to support flat track racers and grow the sport, all motorcycle competitors are welcome.

The first RIDE Academy school of the season will be March 3-4, 2012 at RIDE Academy Headquarters in Charles City, Va. All ages are welcome to participate. Riders under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian present. Lunch vouchers are available both days. All participants must provide their own protective gear including helmet, boots, gloves, jersey or jacket, and pants. Cost is $500 per person.

To register for RIDE Academy on March 3-4 or for more details, visit www.rideacademy.com. RIDE Academy will release additional school dates in the near future.

About RIDE Academy
RIDE Academy is determined to change the world of flat track racing. We believe we have a formula that will lead many riders to success. We are here to extend our combined knowledge to fellow riders so that they can become the best they can be in a far less amount of time than it has taken each of the instructors. To reach excellence you must be determined and willing to have an open mind to take advice and instruction. We instruct on the importance of maintaining the right body position, utilizing control on your motorcycle and using proper techniques to ensure you will be the most successful motorcycle racer you can be. Register for a RIDE Academy school or find out more at www.rideacademy.com.

Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Racing Wrap-Up – February 21, 2012

Round 7 of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series took place on Saturday night at Cowboy’s Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed came to Dallas ready to win. After setting the fastest time in afternoon qualifying it looked as though winning would be in his future however, that was not the case. While pressuring race leader Ryan Villopoto, Reed made an un-characteristic error and went down. During the crash Reed was seriously injured, and will be forced to withdraw from the 2012 Supercross series. Reed’s injuries include a torn ACL, broken Tibia and Fibula, broken ribs and a broken T6 vertebrae. At the time of his crash Reed was in 2nd place in the series’ points standings, just six points away from the top spot. Reed will sit out the remainder of the Supercross Series while he recovers.

Dodge/Hart & Huntington/Sycuan Casino/Bel-Ray Racing’s Josh Hansen continued his streak of top results, finishing in 5th place during the main event. Teammate Kyle Partridge also saw a good result in Dallas. Despite a back of the field start, Partridge persevered, working his way through the field to an eventual 13th place position. Both riders are currently in the top 20 in the series’ points standings with Hansen in 10th and Partridge in 16th.

The Supercross Lites East Coast Series began on Saturday night. Team Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s racers Blake Wharton and Hunter Hewitt both made their series’ debut. Both Wharton and Hewitt qualified for the main event out of their respective heat races, with Wharton holding the lead for part of his heat. In the main event, Wharton nearly grabbed the holeshot and the lead at the start. While challenging the race leader early on in the first lap the two collided, and Wharton went down. Wharton quickly remounted, and began working his way through the pack from his 13th place position. By the end of the fifteen lap main event Wharton was in 4th place, just off the podium. Teammate Hewitt rode consistent laps and finished in 12th place for his efforts.

The series continues to travel east this week stopping in Atlanta Georgia for round 8 this Saturday night.

Barcia Sets Tone for Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Class

AURORA, Ill. (February 20, 2011) – Since opening the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season with four different winners in four races, only one rider has stood atop the podium for the past three weeks. Reigning Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto has kicked his title defense into high gear thanks to three consecutive victories. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider boasts a total of four wins this season, but his recent dominance has helped him pull 13 points ahead of the field in the championship. This weekend, the championship makes its annual trip to the southeast and the hugely-popular stop from Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, for the eighth race of the season.

Media day is Thursday, February 23 from Noon-2:00 p.m. The Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX team of James Stewart and Davi Millsaps, in addition to the Privateer Journey and Rock River Yamaha, will be in attendance.

At the championship’s previous stop last weekend inside Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, Villopoto was able to grab a strong start out of the gate, and took over the lead prior to the conclusion of the opening lap. While he looked to be in control of the top spot, Villopoto was stalked closely by TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed. The lead duo paced one another throughout the opening laps, bringing the crowd of over 50,000 to its feet.

Unfortunately, as he looked to be gaining enough ground on Villopoto to challenge for the spot, Reed suffered a frightening crash on Lap 6 that left him unable to continue. The DNF resulted in a 20th-place finish for Reed, who fell to third in the standings, 30 points out of the lead. To this point, the extent of the effects of Reed’s crash has not been revealed, and his championship status remains uncertain.

While Villopoto took a relatively unchallenged win, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer provided some late-race fireworks in their battle for the runner-up spot. Dungey overcame a 10th-place start to pass Weimer on the final lap to take his second runner-up finish of the season, and fifth podium of the year.

By virtue of his strong run and Reed’s misfortune, Dungey assumed control of second in the Supercross Class standings, 13 points behind Villopoto.

Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart, the fourth rider to win a race this season, started the main event just outside the top five, along with teammate Davi Millsaps. On Lap 3, Millsaps washed out coming out of a turn, leaving Stewart nowhere to go and causing him to stall his bike. Stewart re-entered the race in 19th, but battled his way up to an impressive sixth-place finish. He’s 42 points behind Villopoto in the standings heading into Atlanta.

Last season’s Monster Energy Supercross visit to the Georgia Dome resulted in possibly the most memorable race of the entire 2011 championship. A captivating duel between heated rivals Stewart and Reed resulted in a 19-lap battle for the win that came down to an explosive final lap in which the two riders came together and hit the ground. The incident allowed Villopoto to steal the victory, while continued battling between Stewart and Reed ultimately resulted in Dungey’s move into the runner-up spot. Atlanta is always the site of memorable action, and that trend is sure to continue on Saturday night.

GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia kicked off the Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Championship with a convincing win at Cowboys Stadium. The reigning division champion picked up where he left off on year ago to outrun a slew of new faces in the talented class.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darryn Durham made his debut effort for the Mitch Payton-led team a memorable one by leading the opening stages of the main event. While he was passed by Barcia on Lap 9, Durham maintained his control of second to post a career-best effort. Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen began his first full season on U.S. soil with an impressive effort of his own, following up his heat race win with a third-place finish.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett, who finished fourth in last season’s Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Championship and entered the 2012 season as a title favorite, experienced misfortune on the opening lap of the main event, recording a 15th-place fnish.

Last season in Atlanta, Dean Wilson took a big win for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team during a wild main event that saw five different riders in contention for the checkered flag.

The first supercross race ever held in Atlanta was March 5, 1977, and Bob Hannah won on a Yamaha. On February 22, 1986 Honda rider Keith Turpin won the first-ever Supercross Lites Class Main Event in Atlanta. Ricky Carmichael is first on the Supercross class’ all-time win list at the Georgia Dome with five. Carmichael, Brian Swink and Christophe Pourcel share the Supercross Lites Class’ all-time win record with two. A new face will grace the top step of the podium in the Supercross Lites Class on Saturday night.

SPEED will broadcast Monster Energy Supercross from Atlanta LIVE at 7:30pm EST on February 25, 2012.

AURORA, Ill. (February 17, 2012) – Tomorrow night, Arlington’s Cowboys Stadium will play host to its third Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race as defending Supercross Class Champion Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., looks for his third consecutive win and fourth of the 2012 season.

In capturing his 18th career Supercross Class win last weekend, Villopoto extended his points lead to six heading into the seventh stop of the 17-race season. Villopoto has yet to win in the premier class at Cowboys Stadium, but did capture a Supercross Lites Class win in 2006 when the race was held at Texas Stadium, in Dallas. No stranger to racing in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area, Villopoto knows that this track’s dirt is much different than others on the circuit.

“The dirt in San Diego is tough,” said Villopoto after the race. “There are a few tracks that you want to get through safe and San Diego was one of those for me. (Arlington) is another track that tends to be a bit different from the rest. It’s really hard packed and requires a unique bike set-up, so I’ll be looking to be smooth and fast to try to get the win.”

Currently second behind Villopoto is two-time Supercross Class Champion Chad Reed, who has one win on the season. Reed and Villopoto entertained the San Diego crowd with a late-race battle, and the same type of action is expected tomorrow night. TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Reed holds the record for most Supercross Class wins in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area with four, and last weekend, he notched his 119th career podium finish with his second place effort.

“I am really happy that I rode a solid 20 lap race tonight,” said Reed after the main event in San Diego. “I found myself being a little lazy in the turns and knew I’d have to stay strong and fight for it, if I wanted a chance at the win. The battle between Villopoto and I was good, but he was a little more aggressive than I was. It’s exciting to be headed east and back to Florida with my family. With the changes we have made throughout the West Coast events, we’re hoping for a successful rest of the season.”

JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., finished a disappointing 15th place, his worst finish of the season, and lost some valuable championship points. The former two-time Supercross Class Champion is, however, the only rider in the field that has won in the Supercross Class and Supercross Lites Class in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, capturing premier class wins in 2005 and 2007; his Supercross Lites Class win came in 2003.

“This has been a challenging season so far,” said Stewart. “I actually felt really good during the race last week, but another small thing caused a big problem. It sucks, but that’s where we’re at. San Diego is in the past now, and we have spent a lot of time looking at where we’re at and setting up for the next few races to be strong ones.”

Team Honda Muscle Milk rider Justin Brayton showed impressive strength Saturday night after coming back from a bad crash in qualifying to finish sixth overall in the main event.

“It was a tough day for me with that crash in qualifying,” said Brayton. “After not knowing if I was going to be able to ride at all the rest of the night I am happy with my sixth place finish. I am ready for Dallas and want to continue to build on my finishes the last few weeks.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer had a long night in San Diego. A crash in the heat race sent him to the LCQ, which he won. He nearly earned the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot in the main event, but later would suffer a couple crashes, ending his night in 20th place.

“It was a pretty wild night,” said Weimer. “It looked like I was going to have a good result once the gate dropped for the main, but things didn’t go my way. Each week I show that I have the speed to be up front, so I’m ready for Dallas and just want to race.”

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle had an up-and-down night in San Diego. After showing speed in the heat race, where he came back from a first-turn crash to qualify, the main event did not go as planned. The whoops claimed riders every lap and would take Tickle down twice, finishing 18th.

“I didn’t have the greatest night,” said a disappointed Tickle. “I haven’t ridden the East Coast since 2007, so my main goal is to just improve and ride to my potential.”

GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham also had a disappointing end to his night after riding strong all day, finishing 16th.

“The track was pretty difficult,” said Windham. “The whoops ate a lot of people in the main and unfortunately I was one of them. I felt good the first 17 laps and the GECIO Honda was running great, which makes me feel confident that I am inching closer and closer to the podium. It is frustrating though, having such a good ride and then making one mistake that puts you on the ground. I am looking forward to next weekend and heading east.”

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe was truly in his element in San Diego. The Australian native not only captured his first main event holeshot at Qualcomm Stadium, he also raced his Yoshimura-prepared RM-Z450 to an outstanding fourth-place finish. This excellent effort marks Metcalfe’s best result of the season and also moves him up in the overall championship point standings.

“It was a good night,” said Metcalfe. “We were able to put in some work this week and get the set-up back to what we were comfortable with and what we know works. The Yoshimura Suzuki RMZ-450 really worked great all weekend. I was still a little bit off in practice, but in the heat races and the main, I came through. I got good starts, which helped out, and I was able to ride strong. I qualified third in the heat race and got a good gate pick, so I got where I wanted to be, and ripped the holeshot. That was my first holeshot of the year, so I’m really pumped with that. I rode solid, and I rode as hard as I could, and we got a fourth. I’m looking forward to Arlington. It’s always a really tough, technical track and I’m looking forward to keeping the momentum going.”

TiLUBE/Foremost Insurance Kawasaki’s Nick Wey finished eighth in his heat race and captured a coveted top-10 result in San Diego. Wey’s finish in the Supercross Class was his best this season, and the Michigan native hopes to build on last week’s success.

“The San Diego race went pretty well for me,” said Wey. “I was able to overcome so-so starts and pass a bunch of guys in both my heat and the main, where I got 10th. This was my best finish of the season, but I’m still going to work on a few things this week and try to improve overall. I’m thankful to everyone behind me and I’ll just try to keep improving from here. I’m really looking forward to Dallas and intend to keep improving on my results.”

Troy Lee Designs/ Lucas Oil/ Honda’s Cole Seely made his way to the podium for a second-consecutive week with a second place finish in the Supercross Lites Class Main Event.

“The night went really well for me,” said Seely. “I am happy with a podium heading into the break, as well as sitting way better in the points chase.”

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson could not have been more excited with the win in San Diego last Saturday. Coming into the race, Wilson was 22 points behind the leader in the championship standings. Wilson went out and led every lap of the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Main Event to take the win and take over the points lead by two points.

“The night went brilliant,” said an overjoyed Wilson. “The difference this weekend was that my goal was to just go out and have fun, that’s when I ride my best. We’ve got a nine-week break but that doesn’t mean the work stops. I’ll be riding some outdoors, but I’ll also keep pushing it in supercross and keep a solid program throughout the break. I’m only two points ahead so it’s still going to be tough.”

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Supercross Lites East Region teammates Blake Baggett and Darryn Durham have been itching to race since January and are more than ready to battle for the win in Arlington.

Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki will be headlined by Texas’ own Blake Wharton, who is making his debut with the team, and Hunter Hewitt, a seasoned veteran for the Suzuki squad.

“I’m really excited to get going in Dallas,” said Wharton. “I’ve been training and getting ready for the East Coast in California and I’ve been watching all the west races. I’ve learned a lot and I got to train a lot and I feel good on my bike, and feel good on the track and feel like I’m in good shape. We have press day in Arlington, which should be good and will give us a chance to check out the track. I’m just looking forward to getting this East Coast Lites season under way and we’ll see how it goes, but … I feel good.”

Hewitt will be racing in front of plenty of family and friends in his hometown race at Cowboys Stadium.

“Our first race is in Arlington and it happens to be my hometown race which is cool I guess,” said Hewitt. “It’s just another race in my eyes, but I’ll have my family and friends there that I’ve grown up with. Going into the race, you know it’s the first one, so it’s almost going to be a good gauging point on what everyone has done in the off-season. I know I’ve done my thing, so I know I’m going to be good and strong. I am going there with a clean head, and knowing that I’m going to put in a good solid 15 laps, worry about myself, get a good start and get a good heat qualifying time. I need to make sure I have good starts, that’s what I’m really counting on and I’ve been doing a lot of that at the practice track. Really just staying in my zone, and focusing on myself and just trying to get through this first one and see what my flaws and weaknesses are, and go from there. Thanks to everyone that’s been there supporting me and stuck through. Let’s get racing!”

Leading the way for the Star/Valli Yamaha team is Texas native Kyle Cunningham.

“I’m really looking forward to Arlington,” said Cunningham. “I’ve had a lot of time to prepare, and I’m just excited to get the ball rolling on the East Coast season. It’s great coming to the first round at home, with all my family and friends. The Star/Valli Yamaha Team has done a really good job with the bike and we’ve been working really hard on testing and making sure it’s ready to go and I feel really prepared right now and just ready to get the season going in Texas.”

The Legendary Lucas Oil Indy Mile will run again on Saturday, August 18, 2012 during the Indiana State Fair, and again coinciding with The Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 5, 2012) – Advance tickets go on sale February 17 at 10:00 am EST, for the return of the Lucas Oil Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National at the legendary Indy Mile track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, August 18, 2012. The Lucas Oil Indy Mile returns as a featured event of the Indiana State Fair, and again coincides with the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend. Activities for the Twins division of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles will be begin with gates opening at 2:00pm, timed-qualifying from 3:00pm-5:00pm, opening ceremonies 7:00pm with the first race at 7:30pm.

Glorious memories of the Indy Mile go back for decades. Top riders have always highly coveted a win at this race, long considered the “Crown Jewel” of AMA Pro Racing’s oldest and most tradition-rich professional racing series. The race returned to the State Fairgrounds in 2008, after a nine-year hiatus, to large crowds and much fanfare. Last year’s race was canceled due to the State Fair stage collapse, but will now return not only to the fairgrounds, but also as an official Indiana State Fair event thanks to the cooperative efforts of Fair officials, AMA Pro Flat Track, Peoria Motorcycle Club and Family Events, the race producer.

The list of those who have won at the Indy Mile Flat Track includes many of motorcycle racing’s all-time best riders. Flat Track Grand National Champions Chris Carr, Scott Parker, Jay Springsteen, Ricky Graham, Bubba Shobert and Kenny Roberts have all won on the Indy Mile Flat Track. AMA Pro Flat Track racing has proven to be a fertile training ground for World Road Racing champions as well. MotoGP champions Nicky Hayden, Kenny Roberts Jr., Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts all got early career racing experience in Flat Track racing.

Flat Track is a uniquely American form of motorcycle racing. Riders pitch their machines sideways into the turns, inches apart from each other, at speeds of over 120 mph. Drafting on the long straights keeps the field close and provides the closest finishes in motorcycle racing. The legendary Indy Mile Flat Track is renowned for fast racing, intense drafting wars and multiple lead changes on every lap. Often a photo finish camera is needed to reveal the winner at the end of the furious 25-lap finale.

Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Racing Wrap-Up – February 13, 2012

Round 6 of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series took place on Saturday night in San Diego, California.

TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed had always been the man to beat in San Diego, winning the main event a record 6 times in his career. After a confident win in his heat race, Reed was poised to add to that record. Reed took off well in the main event and settled into a 2nd place position. Keeping the leader in sight Reed was ready to make a pass if the opportunity presented itself. Just two laps from the end Reed made his move and briefly led, but eventual race winner, Ryan Villopoto, was able to get by for the victory. Reed ended the night on the podium for the 5th time this season. His well earned 2nd place finish keeps him in 2nd place in the series’ points standings, now 6 points away from the top spot.

Dodge/Hart & Huntington/Sycuan Casino/Bel-Ray Racing’s Josh Hansen came to San Diego hoping to rebound from last week’s DNF. When the gate dropped, Hansen was sitting outside the top 10 in 13th place. He was able to move up to 10th on lap 4, and charged through the pack for all 20 laps, eventually scoring his season best finish in 5th place. Hansen’s finish vaulted him back into the top 10 in the series’ points standings. Teammate Kyle Partridge qualified directly for the main event with a well earned 4th place in his heat race. Partridge struggled to find his groove during the main event and could only manage a 19th place finish.

Team Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki’s racers Martin Davalos and Jason Anderson both qualified directly out of their heat races and were poised to have an excellent night of racing. Unfortunately poor starts and mistakes caused both riders to finish outside the top 10, with Davalos in 15th and Anderson in 17th. Both riders go into the break inside the top 20 with Anderson in 10th and Davalos in 16th. Teammates Blake Wharton and Hunter Hewitt will replace Davalos and Anderson for the East Coast rounds beginning this weekend, until the series returns to the West Coast in Seattle, WA on April 21st.

Follow all of Bel-Ray’s racers in action each week on www.belray.com and www.belrayracing.com

Bel Ray Company Inc was founded in 1946 and is a privately held, woman owned business serving the lubrication needs of powersports, industrial and mining customers worldwide. Bel-Ray is recognized as the leader in the specialty lubricants industry for setting high standards of quality and performance with products formulated for the motorcycle, automotive, aviation, energy, food, marine, military, mining, OEM, Industrial steel, and textile industries.
