Red Bull Sailing Team on podium after holding Extreme Sailing Series nerve .
Double Summer Games gold medallists Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher knew they needed to get ahead of their great rivals to finish ahead of them in the regatta standings and duly did so after Oman Air fell foul of a penalty.
The Austrian duo led their team to three race wins and several podiums throughout the 25 races on the Californian coast with SAP Extreme Sailing Team of Denmark edging out 2016 champions Alinghi from Switzerland for the regatta victory.
San Diego had previously welcomed the likes of the America’s Cup to its coastline with the the boats racing just five metres from the popular Harbour Island.
Tens of thousands of sailing fans got to see fierce battles across the four days with two collisions happening in the last race alone as tensions mounted in battle.
2016 Red Bull Air Race World Champion Matthias Dolderer also got to witness the thrilling action first hand as a guest of Red Bull Sailing Team after he completed his 2017 Red Bull Air Race season with a second place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The German said of the super-light GC32 catamaran, “These boats fly over the water – it is extremely fast!
“Teamwork, tactics, concentration and energy are key to winning races. I am impressed by the performance from my friends Roman, Hans Peter and their crew.”
The 2017 grand finale is at Los Cabos, Mexico from November 30 through December 3.
